Compulsory Basic Training

Compulsory Basic Training is a legal requirement for all new motorcyclists before being allowed to ride on the public highway. It was introduced by the government in 1990 to reduce accidents and increase rider awareness and good practices among inexperienced motorcyclists. In the first year it achieved a 43% reduction in accidents and continues to improve rider safety. Before taking a CBT course it is essential that you have read or have an understanding of the Highway Code otherwise we will not be able to complete the course on that day.

The CBT is a course of five elements

A – Equipment and Clothing

B – Bike controls and Maintenance

C – Practical on-site riding

D – On road theory

E – Practical on road riding

DVSA Training ratios are as follows :

On the training area maximum
4 students to 1 instructor

On the 2 hr road ride maximum
2 students to 1 instructor

What to expect : During the CBT you will learn the basic skills to make you competent and safe to ride on the public road. THE CBT IS NOT A TEST. Training will take place in the classroom and on site to begin with, on successful completion of the first four elements you will move on to riding on the public highway to gain road riding experience. Your instructor will be in contact with you via a radio link to guide you and ensure that you are safe. Most students will take one day to complete the course however if you are a complete beginner and you are wanting to take the course on a geared bike it may take longer. At the end of the CBT course, so long as you have reached the required standard, you will be issued with a DL196 certificate which is valid for two years from that date.
